The Second Coming in Thessalonians
Readable Notes
4/23/2023 - The Second Coming in Thessalonians #1: Beginning a study of the many references to the second coming of Christ in the two letters to the Thessalonians. This lesson covers 1 Thess. 1:10, what should be our attitudes and activities as we wait for his coming, and 1 Thess. 2:29, on the relationship between pastors and the flocks at his coming.
4/30/2023 - The Second Coming in Thessalonians #2: Continuing the study of the second coming of Christ in the two letters to the Thessalonians. This lesson covers 1 Thess. 3:12-13, that we should live unblameable and holy lives in brotherly love toward one another, so we will not be ashamed when he returns, and that when Jesus returns it will be WITH all his saints. Also 1 Thess. 4:13, that Jesus' return is preceded by the resurrection of dead saints and the rapture of the living saints. There was also a short explanation of the difference between Jesus' imminent coming for this resurrection and rapture, and the not-imminent Second Coming followed by the armies of heaven in fiery judgment and wrath.
5/21/2023 - The Second Coming in Thessalonians #3: Continuing the study of the second coming of Christ in the two letters to the Thessalonians. This lesson covers 1 Thess. 4:13-18 and 1 Cor. 15:51-52 concerning the resurrection of dead believers and the rapture of those living at the time of his appearing. It also explains the difference between Christ returning "in the air" to catch up the resurrected and changed saints to be with him, and his later "Second Coming" in judgment.
5/28/2023 - The Second Coming in Thessalonians #4: This lesson covers 1 Thess. 5:1-6 with its warnings about the day of the Lord coming as a thief in the night, and to be watching and ready. But the main part of the lesson is looking up many of the places in the OT prophets that talk of "the Day of the LORD". This is exactly what Paul refers to when he uses that phrase in 1 Thess. 5.
6/11/2023 - The Second Coming in Thessalonians #5: This is an exposition of 1 Thess. 5:23. We who were enemies are now at peace with God. He sanctifies us wholly and preserves us spirit, soul, and body unto the coming of our Lord Jesus. Also 2 Thess. 1:7-10, which promises rest to the believer, even when Jesus returns in fiery vengeance upon those who have rejected the gospel.
6/18/2023 - The Second Coming in Thessalonians #6: An exposition of 2 Thess. 2:1-5, on things that must happen before the Day of Christ (as opposed to the rapture, which can be at any time). Specifically, the great apostasy of "believers" falling away from the faith, the rise and tyrannical reign of the Antichrist, and (by implication) the rebuilding of the temple with a resumption of temple worship.
